Robert Long moved to Gorge River in 1980 in search of a place where he could live the way he wanted. That is to live in a more sustainable way with less impact on the world. Back then this idea was quite foreign to people and Gorge River was remote enough that he could live this idea without too much peer pressure form normal society.Â
He lived at Gorge River for around 10 years by himself before he married Catherine Stewart and had a son Christan in 1991, and a daughter Robin in 1994.
In his early days Robert lived off the land and required very little money for his lifestyle. What he needed he could earn by working for his neighbours. These were the local crayfishmen who lived along the coast one days walk to the North at Barn Bay, and another one days walk to the south at Big Bay. Â
